In the Waiting-room
We’re about to start the last leg of our trip. It’s taken us about three weeks so far, as we stopped in Tokyo to pick up a troupe of Japanese dancers and showgirls. I’ve been seasick for most of it, and some days I can’t even make it up to the dining room for dinner, much less take care of the baby. Our family has an assigned table, so one of my roommates, an American-born Chinese lady, takes my place there and brings me back food. She’s with my kids so often the crew have started calling her Mrs. Mah. All the men’s rooms are on a separate deck, so I hardly see Wayne. Another roommate is helping me change Willie’s diapers, and Jimmy and Ben are always over in the Japanese showgirls’ room next door. They are all very kind, and one of them even offered to take this photograph for us.
None of our friends in Hong Kong knew we were leaving until a few days before we left. We hardly had time to say our good-byes. We were so worried that if word got out about the false papers someone might try to get money out of us.
